Picasso Challenge #3: Woman with a Mix Tape ETA: SK Riot Grrls

I actually had to think about this one. I'm a lover of colour, but I found it quite hard to combine the right ones here. In the end, I went for this vintage tapestry coat layered over a green sweater dress over red skinny pants and the new creepers which I'm Not Taking Off this week. (here's my report in case you missed it). Not as spectacular as some of the outfits I've seen, but hey, I'm happy. :)

Since I'm off to the Paradiso later to jump up and down in front of Sleater Kinney, this outfit needs to go day to evening. So I've layered it with a printed tee, some fun arm candy and, of course, the mix tape bag. I've packed a few golden '80's hits to go:

  1. Human League - Love Action
  2. Wham - Everything She Wants
  3. Hall and Oats - Kiss Is On My List
  4. ABC - The Look of Love
  5. Heaven 17 - Temptation
  6. New Order - Blue Monday
  7. The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?
  8. Talking Heads - Burning Down The House
  9. Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer
  10. Grace Jones - Slave to the Rhythm

Enjoy!

ETA: that was incendiary! Those ladies really tore up the Paradiso.

For your viewing pleasure, here are a few pics of Sleater Kinney from the pit. As you can see, Carrie is a guitar goddess, and Corin wore a dress to match my socks.

Best. Girl. Band. Ever.

Love this!  The pattern on your coat and the red pants are good interpretations of the painting.  I love that bag and your play list.  I'm glad to hear the shoes worked out so well for you.

  • Tanya replied 9 years ago

Awesome interpretation, love the red and green together.  Fun playlist and I adore your bag.

Love this outfit! Especially with the polka dot socks... Have fun tonight. :)

(Can we add Duran Duran's Planet Earth, Girls on Film, and Save a Prayer?)

Killer. I LOVE the colour of those trousers, ap. Arty Fun Deluxe.

The socks are a very playful touch, and work well with the fun bag. The topper adds a chic sophistication - aren't toppers powerful that way? And your new body art is a welcome addition. WELL DONE.

WOOOHOOOOO. Just loving all the Picasso renditions.

Sleater Kinney was in town a few weeks ago but I couldn't go. Enjoy the show and you look great.

...Now I have "The Look of Love" stuck in my head. :)

    Terrific fun!

  • approprio replied 9 years ago

Thanks everyone! I'm so enjoying this challenge, it's made my week.

Angie: I think there should be a new playlist whenever this bag makes an appearance. We still need to hear from Duran Duran, The Police, Adam and the Ants, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Eurythmics and many, many more.

citygirldc: that's a pity! I hear they're knocking it out of the park on this tour. And for the earworm, you're welcome :P

Oh wow! That is one beautiful coat and I want to steal that handbag :D. You have fun style approprio :-) super rendition of the painting!

  • rachylou replied 9 years ago

Nice one. Red, black, and pattern. You're ready for the pit.

  • Angie replied 9 years ago

YES. Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Ultravox, Yazoo, Tears for Fears and The Police are my '80s favourites. I loved Joe Jackson and Roxy Music too. Good Heavens - that's emotional music. My heart is doing a major pitter patter.

Did you know that the very, VERY stylish blokes of Duran Duran were awarded a style award in Milan a few years ago - to honour their ongoing killer style. Those dashing boys are all over 50. I LOVE THAT.

I also wanted to marry Simon Le Bon when I was a teen. It was a sad day when I found out he married supermodel Yasmin. What was he thinking, my broken heart thought ????

Superb! This outfit rocks, Approprio! I love the topper over the whole thing. And your new shoes. They are so awesome on you. "Sledgehammer" is in my head now--love it!

Oh, goodness! All this talk of fab 80's music. Love it!!!! We all need to meet up one day for an 80's party :D

Love your style Approprio. Fabulous coat, fun bag and love the red trousers. A wonderful interpretation of the painting.

I am SO in for the '80s Party.

Oh that outfit makes me smile!  Just the right amounts of tough & fun!  Love the red pants, the bag, the socks.

  • Debora replied 9 years ago

Love your interpretation and how your coat mirrors the pattern in the painting. Fun bag! Have a great time tonight. :)

Great look & I LOVE the pants with the shoes.

    I just put on some Eurythmics - thanks - I love Annie's voice :)

  • Jaime replied 9 years ago

Love the coat, love the red pants, love the shoes and also the way you can layer down later. If I listened to your mix tape I would be in nostalgia space for hours.

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

This is fantastic. I love the coat with the red pants and socks -- the pattern mix perfectly evokes the painting.

  • approprio replied 9 years ago

Thanks everyone! Edited to add a few grainy pics of the inspirational Sleater Kinney in the Paradiso last night.

Angie: what young girl didn't want to marry Simon Le Bon? I was equally entranced by the epic posturing of Adam Ant. But I'm going to award a special prize to Morten Harket for being the hot '80's dude who now looks hotter than ever. Be still my beating heart!

And are there ever going to be more mix tapes. Count me in for the '80's party.

  • AM replied 9 years ago

    Absolutely perfect. Love it!!

  • Angie replied 9 years ago

HAH. YES. EVERY gal I know was into Morten Harket - that video "Take On Me" was state of the art in its time. It's amazing how much better he looks now - agreed. WOW. Thanks for sharing,

Have you seen how incredible Tears for Fears look now too? Here's a peek:

  • Angie replied 9 years ago

(Excuse the thread high jack, approprio. You unleash a monster when you talk about the '80s).

  • replied 9 years ago

LOVING the 80s music memories. Why are those songs not on my playlist? Must rectify. Can we add some B52s to the mixtape?

Approprio, you look fantastic -- I love how you brought in the colours of the painting in your bangles <80s girl band soundtrack starts playing>, the tunic-sock pattern pairing is amazing, and I. love. that. bag. Great look!

  • approprio replied 9 years ago

Wow, Tears for Fears are looking good! Who knew!

Oh you don't need to talk to me about '80's fabness. It's close to my heart too. Sorry I haven't managed a ramble about it over on the other thread yet. But you can look forward to another rendition of this next week, with some '80s vintage thrown in, when Underworld come to town...
