WIW: Vintage Glam

I've posted this 80's vintage Kenzo Jeans jacket here before, which I fell madly in love with at first sight. Everything about it - tailoring, material, print, construction - is amazing, but there was never any doubt it would be a challenge to style. My instinct is always to dress it up with other statement pieces because I think it can look a bit dated and underdone with more subdued garments, but there's always a risk of pushing things over the top.

Rewinding another ten years to the inspiration for today's outfit, I've made no secret of the fact that I like to borrow from the boys and if there was ever a boy that every girl wants to be it has to be David Bowie. When I pull on a pair of gold pants, Ziggy Stardust is never far from my mind, but seldom with so literal a reference as a pair of lace-up boots.

So tell me ladies, did I pull it off? Or is this just too much Vintage Glam for your Monday?

(Note to self - get a haircut.)

  • Thistle replied 10 years ago

So fun!  Monday morning glam. I so needed it after the awful snow this weekend :)

    Killer

You had me with the '80s integrity of the outfit. xo

  • AM replied 10 years ago

    Awesome. So fresh!

LACeleste, Thistle, AM: thanks for the boost! I'm thinking Mondays should be more glam in future, particularly in lousy weather.

Angie: well, I'm an '80's kid raised on '80's fashion, so I don't mind picking up that ball and running with it. But please tell me politely the moment I look like I haven't worn anything else in the meantime...

Go Team '80s, and high five. I was a teen in the '80s so naturally, the era is close to my heart. I'm hopefully sufficiently polite, and can't imagine you NOT making a vintage piece look modern and hip. xo

Love how you've styled this! The print on the jacket is wonderful - just the right thing to soften the look.

This is just amazing: the jacket itself of course but also the whole outfit. Awesome inspiration too!

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Totally fab. Love it. And the inspiration is also great.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

Love this. It is exactly that you are wearing a vintage jacket and making it appear completely today that is so impressive. Love the jeans or whatever they are too!

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

This is completely working on you -- head turning, but only in the best way.  Fun, but still flattering.

Looks comfy, too, which is a definite plus.

  • Mia replied 10 years ago

    Perfect!

Definitely not too much. It all works together splendidly. The pants and jacket are both awesome, and they complement each other well, in color and style. I love the burnished gold with the golden tones in the jacket. Great boots for this outfits, too, and this style really suits you.

Love the details you shared of your rings but the whole outfit is so fun. Love it and the jacket is amazing.

Ah, ladies, you really are all too kind! Thanks everybody for your comments!

I wore it day to evening yesterday and it all felt pretty good. Comfy urban glam. But I think my friends are all too used to it because they rarely comment anymore. Happy to know it's not too OTT.

Angie, Shevia:  I always think the secret to updating vintage is to look for great quality in the first place. Materials, construction, design, fit.... these things never go out of style! But I also love it when something has a history as well, and it's nice to try to weave that in to the look.

You are a gifted stylist and this outfit is fabulous. Perhaps we should make every Monday "Glam Monday":). Those pants are fabulous.

  • approprio replied 10 years ago

Deborah: Glam Monday? I say Yeah! Bring it on!

And a credit is due for the pants - yet another indispensable treasure from BYBROWN, our local hero. I wish she'd put more product on the website.
