WIW: New Boots and Panties!!

I broke my pledge to dress from the bench to put a couple of new additions through their paces and I couldn't resist a tribute to the late great Ian Dury. You've probably never heard of this Brit punk icon, a man so committed to thrifting that the only items he bought new were shoes and underwear, or so he claimed.

When you learn a foreign language, inevitably there are going to be one or two words that make you snigger. Here in the Netherlands, what I call tights and you probably know as hose have a name that always has me chortling like a prepubescent schoolboy.

Panty. Hence the title.

Yeah, that's what I'm wearing today under my shorts, playing the young things at their own game in shear support tights by Dutch household brand Hema. At risk of sounding like a shill, this is the miracle product for walking all day and dancing all night. Something for the weekend, as Ian might say. ;)

But I digress. This was very nearly a K/R for the boots, but it was a no brainer so here they are on their maiden voyage instead. They are a shot in the arm for my winter style this year, exactly what I needed to get a few skirts off the bench and so much more besides. Not exactly premium but good enough quality at the price point and really very comfortable. I wasn't sure they'd work on the bike but it turns out they cuff nicely so no problems there.

The coat is a workhorse from 2012, the sweater a traditional Guernsey fisherman's jumper I bought on summer holiday. It's gorgeous and I've been looking forward to wearing it but it's not quite the shoo-in I was hoping for. It may take a few outings to get the measure of it, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

And the Dutch word for brown sugar? That will never get old.

Definitely having a good old snigger here :D Thanks for brightening my Friday.

Now on to your amazing outfit. Love, love, love those boots...they have your name written all over them...perfect for your style. There's nothing I don't like about your look here actually. To me it's so cohesive, edgy, arty and true to you.

Hit me with your rhythm (or style) stick ;)

Whoa! You look SO cool!  Thanks for the giggle too :)

Those boots have a great shape and I'm glad you kept them. The whole outfit looks warm and as Diane said, arty.

    Very funny!
This looks great. I'm glad the boots work on your bike.

You look edgy and amazing! Those awesome boots alone were reason enough to break your pledge. I can see why you were anxious to wear them. I will be honest that the "panties" and "brown sugar" references had me giggling like a kid. I am presently baking an apple crisp and made sure to include plenty of that basterdsuiker. :-)

Those are awesome boots.  Thanks for the giggle.  I love the whole outfit.  I am a big fan of supportive hose.  A lovely young lady in her twenties introduced me to them.  Dance away.

Love the outfit, not sure how I'll get over the language lesson. Lol. I mean, I learned to call pants trousers and this is going the opposite way! ;)

Great outfit. You inspired me to try something similar, but I don't have a suitable black skirt.

  • cindysmith replied 7 years ago

Love this outfit! It looks good on you, and it looks rather cozy, too.

And my inner 12 year old loves that rights are called a panty in The Netherlands

  • minimalist replied 7 years ago

THOSE BOOTS! they work on the bike, too? How functionally fab is that??!

    Love the whole ensemble.

  • Janet replied 7 years ago

Great look! The boots are swoon-worthy.

And I played plenty of Ian Dury during my days in college radio. Now this will be running through my brain for the rest of the day:

I have that album!! What great boots - are they roomy or snug?

Words are so much fun aren't they!  I've been watching the Danish TV series "Borgen" on netflix. I see a version with spoken Danish with English subtitles, and they use quite a few words taken directly from English and not translated. My favorite is the word spindoctor  which is the job title (really) for the prime minister's press secretary.

    The outfit is really fab!

Fabulous outfit, really topped off so perfectly by your hat!  I used to live in the Netherlands and loved Hema as well for their amazing finds and reliable basics (and naughtily at this time of year, their borstplaat!) xx

Fantastic outfit, wow! Love this on you -- it's a fun change of silhouette. Those boots look super comfortable.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 7 years ago

When I saw the title, I was thinking, "Now there's an outfit!" Too funny, and you are looking as cool as ever. Love those boots and the skirt outfit with them. The beret is great on you.

Brilliant! I love the proportions on this so much, and those boots are a wow!

I had that blockheads record and -- along with some choice TRB -- it was the soundtrack to my sixth form years. Thanks for the happy memories!

    Omg! Love.

You look adorable in #2. The bright pop of orange hair is very effective.

  • approprio replied 7 years ago

ah cheers everyone! I'm very happy with these boots and cheered to find myself back in this silhouette. It's been a while.

Nice to know I'm not the only bitter old punk in the room. Janet: that song's an anthem. (Every bit of clothing ought to make you pretty - see my tailor, he's called Simon, I know it's going to fit!) Aliona: I loved Tom Robinson! And Firecracker: you may laugh, but that's pretty much what Peaches was wearing on stage last week. She's 50 and fearless. I will not be emulating her.

Chris987: now I think about spindoctors, I realise the word's been associated with some very dodgy press aides. Does the name gives them a certain license with the truth I wonder? Language is interesting like that. I'm always intrigued by the little variances between British and American English too. I'm learning a great deal about that right here.

and binkle: the website said the boots run small, so I sized up and they're a good fit. Enough room for a wooly sock. You need that in winter.

  • Jaime replied 7 years ago

Love the boots - I have been eyeballing some otk boots and you may have thrown me over the edge.

  • Kaelyn replied 7 years ago

Woohoo!  I love all of these.  Those boots are totally killer, and from one lover of black clothing to another, I simply adore how you look so alive and at home in it.

  • Beth Ann replied 7 years ago

Let's hear it for the panties!  They look great, and the boots are the perfect OTK for your style.  The hat is a great crowning touch, too.  Mod and modern.

  • lyn67 replied 7 years ago

Wow, a shot  like this, would like to get one, too:-). Hope you survive:-), as your fab boots  can really change your life(daily outfits:-)) so I expect  you to come with more and more great interpretations.
