WIW: urban pop art

Summer's a long time coming here in Amsterdam. It's still quite cool and windy, and we've had some apocalyptic rainstorms, so not quite into the warm weather wardrobe yet.

I'm venturing into 90's territory with acid brights today, pairing the Bad Boyfriend with a chambray skirt by House of Holland. This is what I bought when I went shopping for a loose fitting black blazer and a denim midi. No, really. That's how both these pieces came to be in my closet. The shirt is by Uniqlo SPRZ NY, and features a work by LA artist Daniel Martinez. It always makes me think of Terminator.

This ensemble has a high happy quotient and I feel properly Bright Winter. It's been pulling a lot of side eye today, but that's maybe more to do with the colour contrast than the execution.

HAHAHA. Super cute, Rio. VERY fun outfit.

There is definitely an '80s vibe mixed in with the '90s rendition. I can't think of anyone who would look as comfortable as you in this outfit. You pull it off 100%. GREAT addition of the shoulder pads. They frame the silhouette of the outfit.

    Hasta La Vista, Baby.

And, my Papa who lives in Arnhem told me about those hectic tropical storms this week. Not typical.

    You have killer style.

  • Style Fan replied 9 years ago

Oh I love that outfit.  All of it.  That bad boyfriend, the T and the denim skirt.  I echo abc.  You really do have killer style.

On another note I love to see the photos of Fabbers from other parts of the world.  Holland looks so beautiful.  A place I have not been.

Thanks Angie, abc, Style Fan! I've worn the jacket and shirt with dark wash skinny jeans before but the skirt is completely new territory. It looks very different and has a feel-good factor that is off the charts. Confidence is the vital extra ingredient. :)

And yes, Holland is indeed beautiful, but as Angie's Papa confirms, the weather is frequently terrible.

super fun outfit!  I really like that contrasting band on the midi.  It feels very Japanese to me somehow; makes me think of obis and indigo shibori textiles.

Love your confidence. Killer cool indeed.

Love this on you. You look so happy too, which is always a great accessory  :)

EXCELLENT tee shirt. The coat is wonderful, too!

This seems so 80s to me! I love the sass and panache you have.

The title of this look is absolutely perfect. You carry it so well!

  • frannieb replied 9 years ago

The whole outfit is absolute perfection on you. it just doesn't seem like it should be such and awesome outfit but it is. like others said it is your confidence shining through that makes the outfit

Love this fit so quirky and retro the skirt is giving me that 90s vibe and the coat is everything.

  • Jaime replied 9 years ago

Yes you are walking urban pop art. Hats off!

  • approprio replied 9 years ago

Well, thank you ladies! I do believe that confidence is key to making a look like this work. If you believe in it, so will everyone else.

Aziraphale: I love this tee, it's so brilliantly ambiguous it could mean anything. I've been trying to think of a joke about Skynet but I can't.

Diana: that's interesting! I hadn't thought of that, but I see it now. And I always get a "comme des garçons" feel from polka dots. I'll keep that in mind when styling this skirt.

Easy to see why you are so happy with this outfit.....love the vibe and the colour....it's a dynamic look.

  • Sara L. replied 9 years ago

I love this outfit on you.  Maybe people are giving you the side eye because they are trying to read your t-shirt (I know I would be - I'm curious about things like that).

  • annagybe replied 9 years ago

    That's really cool.

    Loving this look!

Love that your sense of humor and proportion is on display here. The touches of brights are so refreshing, and those shoes ground the outfit.

  • dakotacheryl replied 9 years ago

OMGosh...fun, funky and totally individual !!

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

I love that tee! So great. And there is something about it being in pink (vs. the expected black) that makes it so much better. Love it paired with the polka dots in the skirt and the big bad blazer. You are a style inspiration.

The pinks and reds, plus great silhouette make this outfit sing. You are killer cool and fab!

  • approprio replied 9 years ago

Thanks so much ladies! It means a lot, because while I love this look it is a little outside my comfort zone. But I guess that's where I live, and where I'm at my best :) Thanks so much again for your feedback! x

Super cool, super fun, I love it!

    Glorious!

  • jackiec replied 9 years ago

    You pull this off gloriously.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 9 years ago

I love this outfit, too! I like the way the shoes anchor the look and echo the black of the jacket. The jacket is terrific over that full skirt, too. I think that silhouette works especially nicely because the yoke is slim; if the skirt were poufy from the waist, the jacket might not hang as effortlessly over it.
